The word Gnome is from Renaisance Latin gnomus, a word apparently coined by Swiss alchemist Paracelus. Paracelus includes gnomes in his list of elementals, as earth elementals. He describes them as two spans high, and very taciturn.

The chthonic elemental spirit has precedents in numerous ancient and medieval mythologies, often guarding mines and precious underground treasures.

Gnomes are shy, just like their king, and they are often seen in human form, sometimes as a small, stout person

Just like the archetypical garden statures -but they can also be seen as tiny, fairy-like creatures.

Their voices tend to be rather shrill and you can often hear them talking if you stand quietly in the woods at midnight.

Gnomes work with the earth, crystals, flowers, trees and rocks.
